FUEL THINNING IN ORACLE AREA

FUEL REDUCTION IN ORACLE - (April 2009)
The Florence Wildland Crew worked brush thinning along American Ave. Here are some views of the crew working. Volunteers cleaned up after they completed and got lots of old trash. They are continuing the other side as they can.

Hot Shot Crew on Cody Loop
(April 16, 2009) – Coronado National Forest had a Hotshot crew from Helena Montana working in Area 5. Area 5 is an island section of the CNF which is bordered by Cody Loop, Hobe Road and Mount Lemmon Highway. These crews will be doing mechanical fuel treatments in preparation for CNF to open the area up for firewood permits and other thinning projects.
Up until a few years ago, Area 5 was planned for a prescription burn. Private development and changes in prescriptions and fuel loading, have prompted CNF to discontinue burning plans and to thin the area mechanically.
Area 5 is a very high fire hazard area and we are very thankful that CNF has been able to allocate funding to this important community fire safety project.

Cherry Valley Wash Thinning – the DOC fuel thinning project in Cherry Valley Wash at OSP went well. Cherry Valley Wash is a good natural fuel break, but it was thick with dead trees. After only four days of removing dead vegetation, the wash provides a suitable fuel break should a fire occur on either side of the wash.
